Add an organisation

Add an organisation

This page shows you how to add a new organisation to ATLAS with the + Add organization wizard. You name the organisation, add the domains you know, and can record the scanning mandate in the same pass.

Who can do this

People with the admin or user role can add an organisation. The + Add organization button is visible to everyone, but ATLAS refuses it for someone without a role.

Before you begin

Know the organisation's name and the domains it uses, for example its website and mail domains. These are the starting points, or "seeds", from which ATLAS discovers the rest.
If you want to record the mandate now, have the name and role of the person who signed it. You can also record it later under Settings › Scope & consent. See Scope and consent.

Open the wizard

1
Choose the organisation button at the top right of the header.
2
In Switch organization, choose + Add organization.

The wizard opens full screen. On the left it lists the four steps: Organization & domains, Threat model, Scan scope & consent and Import inventory. Below the steps the wizard notes: "Discovery starts when you run a scan from the Scans page. Passive stages read public records only and need no mandate. Data stays in the EU." On the right, Your map so far previews the domains you add. Choose Cancel at any time to close the wizard without creating anything.

If your ATLAS workspace has no organisation yet, the wizard opens by itself when you open ATLAS.

Step 1: name the organisation and add its domains

The step is headed "Who are we mapping?".

1
In Organization name, type the organisation's name.
2
Choose the kind of organisation: Hospital, Municipality, University, Government, Factory · OT, IT organization or Other.
3
In the domain box, type a domain, for example example.nl, and choose Add domain. The domain appears in the list with the note "Verify later via DNS TXT".
4
Repeat for every domain you know. Choose Remove next to a domain to take it out again.
5
Choose Continue to threat model. The button works once the organisation has a name and at least one domain.
Step 1 of the Add organization wizard, with fields for the organisation name, its kind and its domains

Step 2: threat model

This step asks "What would hurt most if it were compromised?". For a new organisation ATLAS has not discovered anything yet, so the list is empty. Choose Skip for now, or Continue to scan scope.

You mark crown jewels later, on the Map, once ATLAS has found the organisation's hosts. See Mark crown jewels and criticality.

This step asks "May we knock on the doors?". Active reconnaissance sends network traffic to the organisation's systems, so it needs a mandate signed by someone authorised to give it. Without a mandate, ATLAS shows only what public records reveal.

1
If the organisation has signed a mandate, tick Authorise active reconnaissance for the domains above.
2
In Name and role of the signatory, type who signed it, for example "J. Jansen, CISO". This field is required when the box is ticked.
3
Choose Continue to import.

If you leave the box unticked, you can record the mandate later. See Scope and consent.

Step 4: import inventory

This step is optional. Importing an existing asset list is not available yet, so choose Finish and open map, or Skip for now.

What happens next

ATLAS creates the organisation, switches to it and opens its Map. A message confirms: "<name> added. Verify a domain under Scope & consent, then run passive reconnaissance to discover its estate."

The new organisation has no hosts yet. Its Map shows "No hosts discovered yet". Then:

1
Open Settings and prove that the organisation owns its domains. See Scope and consent.
2
On the Map, choose Run passive recon to discover the organisation's hosts from public records. See Scans.

Every organisation has four built-in scan profiles: Passive only, Quick, Standard and Monthly full. See Scans.
