Scans

Scans

This page explains how ATLAS scans an organisation, how to start and follow a scan, and how to tune what a scan does. It also explains what each kind of scan touches, so you know exactly what reaches your systems and when.

Open Scans in the header. The page reads "Reading the scan configuration…" for a moment while it loads. Its subtitle shows the organisation, the number of active schedules and the number of scans on record.

Who can do this

People with the admin or user role can start, pause, resume and cancel scans, and edit scan profiles. Demo organisations are never scanned: every scan you start for one is refused.

Passive and active: what reaches your systems

ATLAS works in three kinds of steps, called stages. A scan runs the stages of its profile in a fixed order.

KindWhat it doesWhat it needs
PassiveReads public records only: certificate transparency logs, DNS and domain registries, and, where Soveryne has set them up, what third-party internet indexes already know about the organisation. Sends nothing to the organisation.A domain in scope
ActiveSends network traffic to the organisation's hosts: finds open ports and services, identifies the software behind web services, audits TLS and SSH settings, and looks for exposed pages.A signed mandate and proved ownership
EnrichmentWorks on what the scan observed: matches software versions against the vulnerability catalogue, and checks configurations. Sends nothing new.The vulnerability catalogue (for CVEs)

The stages

StageKindIn plain words
Passive reconnaissancePassiveFinds names from certificate transparency, DNS and the registry.
Third-party indexesPassiveReads what internet indexes have recorded about the organisation's addresses and domains. Skipped when these lookups are not configured for your workspace.
Host consolidationPreparationMerges names that point to the same machine, so heavy stages run once per machine.
Name discoveryActiveTries likely host names in verified domains, based on the organisation's own naming.
Port and service scanActiveFinds open TCP ports and identifies the service on each.
UDP service probesActiveSends each UDP service a message it recognises and records the ones that answer.
Technology fingerprintingActiveFetches each website's home page and recognises the software it is built with.
Client-code harvestingActiveReads a website's own pages and scripts for addresses, host names and credentials it hands to every browser.
Web content discoveryActiveAsks a website for pages it serves but does not link to.
TLS auditActiveChecks ciphers, key sizes, certificate chains and expiry on every TLS service.
SSH algorithmsActiveChecks for outdated SSH key exchange, host key, cipher and integrity settings.
Template scanningActiveRuns observation-only checks for known weaknesses on websites.
CVE enrichmentEnrichmentMatches every observed software version against the vulnerability catalogue, adding CVSS, EPSS and the CISA KEV listing to each finding.
Configuration checksEnrichmentReports configuration weaknesses, such as an administration page or a database that is reachable from the internet.

Three more stages are intrusive: Default credential verification, Authorization matrix and Web cache poisoning. They need a separate intrusive-testing authorisation and only run against the hosts it names. No built-in profile contains them. See Authorise intrusive testing.

Note
Default credential verification and the Authorization matrix are still being completed. Kubernetes cluster assessment, which needs credentials from you, follows later.

Check whether scanning is allowed

The top of the Scans page always shows whether active scanning may run. The headline reads, for example, "Active scanning is authorized for every domain in scope", "Active scanning is authorized for 4 of 5 domains", or "Active stages are blocked for <organisation>". Five cells explain why:

CellWhat it shows
MandateSigned, with the signatory and date, or Not on file with "Record one under Settings › Scope & consent".
Domain ownershipHow many domains are proved, for example "4 of 5 proved", and which are not.
Private targetsWhether private, internal addresses may be scanned for this organisation. By default only public addresses are scanned.
CVE catalogueWhether the vulnerability catalogue is Installed, from "Vulnerability Intelligence", or Missing.
Tools & lookupsThe scanning tools installed, and whether the third-party lookups are set up: "All third-party lookups are configured", or which are not, for example "Shodan and Google lookups are not configured for this workspace".
The Scans page of an organisation without a mandate, with the gate strip reading Active stages are blocked

When there is no mandate, the strip reads "No signed mandate on file. Passive stages still run; every active stage is refused and logged." To fix this, see Record the scanning mandate. Unproved domains get passive stages only until ownership is proved.

Run passive reconnaissance from the Map

The quickest way to start on a new organisation:

1
Make sure the organisation has at least one domain in scope.
2
Open Map. While the organisation has no hosts, the Map shows Run passive recon.
3
Choose Run passive recon.

ATLAS reads public records and adds the hosts it discovers to the Map. Nothing is sent to the organisation's systems, so this needs no mandate and no proved ownership.

Start a scan

1
Open Scans. On the Activity tab, choose Start a scan. The Start a scan dialog opens.
2
Under Profile, choose a profile, for example Passive only, Quick, Standard or Monthly full. Its description appears below.
3
Under Scope, choose what to scan:
Whole organization: every host.
Selected domains: tick the domains. Each shows "ownership proved" or "not proved · passive only".
A single host: choose the host from the list.
Hosts matching a filter: choose Internet-facing, Third-party, Shadow or Internal.
Changed since last scan: only the hosts the last scan changed, with their number next to the option. A host counts as changed when it was first seen, or had a finding opened or fixed, after the scan before the last one finished. This is the same rule as the Map's Since last scan view.
4
Under When, choose Now.
5
Read Preflight. It says how many stages will run, for example "12 of 14 stages will run", and gives the reason for each stage that will not, such as "Refused — no signed mandate", "Refused — ownership not proved for <domain>", or "3 hosts on <domain> skipped". The footer estimates the duration, for example "About 25 min for 21 hosts".
6
Choose Start scan.

ATLAS confirms "<profile> requested for <organisation>." The scan appears on the Activity tab.

The Start a scan dialog with a profile chosen, the whole organisation as scope and the preflight list of stages

The scan covers only the scope you chose. For selected domains, a filter or a single host, passive discovery and the third-party lookups are also limited to the chosen domains, or to the domains of the chosen hosts.

Changed since last scan needs at least two completed scans and at least one change. Otherwise the scan is refused with the reason, for example "Nothing changed in the last scan, so there is nothing to scan again."

If every stage would be refused, the footer reads "Every stage would be refused. The attempt is still logged." You can still start it: ATLAS records the refused attempt in the scan history, with the reason.

Scan one host

To scan a single host for its ports, versions, technologies and CVEs:

1
Choose the host on the Map, or open it from Findings or Inventory.
2
Choose Scan this host.

The button changes to "Scan queued" and then "Scanning · NN%". If a scan of that host is already running, ATLAS says "<host> is already being scanned."

Follow a running scan

While a scan runs, the Activity tab shows it at the top: "Running · <profile>", the scope and number of hosts, who started it and when, the progress, and the stage running now. The counters show Hosts in scope, Stages done, Open ports on record and Findings reported.

Under Progress, choose how to show it:

ViewWhat it shows
PipelineThe stages in order, grouped as "Passive · public records only", "Active · mandate and proved ownership" and "Enrichment", with the state and a summary of each, and a live log.
TimelineThe stages on a time axis with a line for now.
MatrixEvery host against every stage: Done, Running, Queued, Refused or Not applicable.

Choose Watch on map → to follow the scan on the Map.

Pause, resume or cancel

Choose Pause to stop sending traffic. The scan stops between requests; the port scan stops between hosts. The card reads "Paused · <profile>".
Choose Resume to continue.
Choose Cancel to stop the scan.

When no scan runs, the tab reads "No scan running", with Start a scan.

The Activity tab of the Scans page with the scan history

Read the scan history

Scan history on the Activity tab lists every scan, with these columns: Status, Profile · scope, Started, Duration, What it found and Actions.

StatusMeaning
CompletedThe scan finished. What it found summarises the change, for example "+3 hosts · +4 findings · 2 fixed", or "No changes".
RefusedATLAS did not run it. What it found gives the reason, for example that there is no mandate.
FailedThe scan stopped with an error.
CancelledSomeone cancelled the scan.

To run a scan again with the same settings, choose Re-run. The Start a scan dialog opens with the same profile and scope.

Compare two scans

1
Tick two completed scans in the history.
2
Choose Compare 2 runs.

A table compares the Scope, Stages run, Hosts, Open ports, Open findings, New findings, Fixed, Duration (min) and Stages only in one. The older scan is on the left, the newer on the right. Choose Hide comparison to close it.

Schedules

The Schedules tab shows a calendar and the organisation's planned scans, with blackout dates on which "No scan starts on these days".

Note
Saved schedules and blackout dates do not start or skip scans automatically yet. Choose Run now on a schedule to start its scan straight away.

Scan profiles

A profile decides which stages a scan runs and how hard it works. Each organisation starts with four built-in profiles:

ProfileWhat it is for
Passive onlyPublic records and third-party indexes. Sends nothing to the organisation, so it runs without a mandate.
QuickPorts, services and technologies, with the checks and CVEs that follow from them. No content discovery and no templates.
StandardThe full set of non-intrusive stages at a considerate pace.
Monthly fullEverything non-intrusive, with the widest word lists. Long, and noisy enough that it belongs in a maintenance window.

Edit a profile

1
Open Scans and choose the Configuration tab.
2
Under Scan profiles, choose a profile. Built-in profiles carry BUILT-IN. Each card shows how many stages it runs and how many schedules use it.
The Configuration tab of the Scans page with the four built-in scan profiles and the stage toggles
3
Change the name or "What this profile is for".
4
Turn stages on or off. They are grouped as Passive ("Public records · nothing sent to the target"), Active and Enrichment ("Runs on what the scan observed"). Each stage shows a label saying what it needs: | Label | Meaning | |---|---| | NAMED SCOPE | Needs a domain in scope. | | MANDATE + OWNERSHIP | Needs the mandate and proved ownership. | | API KEY | Needs a key for a third-party source. | | CATALOGUE | Needs the vulnerability catalogue. | | NO GATE | Works on what earlier stages recorded. | | NEEDS AUTHORISATION / INTRUSIVE AUTHORISED | An intrusive stage, and whether the organisation has authorised it. | | REFUSED HERE | An active stage that this organisation refuses, because no mandate is on file. |
5
Optionally, change a stage's settings. A changed value shows "Overrides default <value> · reset"; choose reset to go back.

ATLAS saves your changes automatically. The summary at the top shows the number of stages, how many are active, and the estimated time for the whole estate.

Note
The TLS audit can also probe for known TLS vulnerabilities. This is off by default. When you turn it on, the stage warns "Vulnerability probes on — this stage now actively probes".

Create, delete or run a profile

To make your own profile, choose a profile and then Duplicate as new profile.
To delete a profile you made, choose Delete. Built-in profiles cannot be deleted. A profile that schedules still use is refused: "<profile> is used by 2 schedules. Remove those first."
To start a scan with a profile straight away, choose Run this profile.

Settings that apply to every profile

The Deployment · applies to every profile block shows settings that Soveryne manages for the whole service: whether private targets are allowed, the scanning tools installed, which Third-party lookups are configured, and the vulnerability catalogue. Checks that would make your hosts call out to an outside service are always off and cannot be turned on.

How ATLAS keeps scanning safe

Nothing is sent to an organisation without a signed mandate and proved ownership.
Only public addresses are scanned, unless Soveryne has recorded an internal engagement for the organisation.
Every refused scan or stage is logged with its reason.
Ordinary stages only observe: no logins, no password guessing, no exploitation and no denial of service.
Intrusive stages need their own time-limited authorisation that names the hosts.
Pausing takes effect between requests, so you can stop traffic quickly.
A scan that stops making progress is marked "Stopped · no progress since …" in the scan history on the Reports page, rather than looking as if it is still running. Start it again.
