Controls

Controls

The Controls page is your register of security controls: what your organisation does to protect itself, written down, mapped to frameworks, tied to the assets it protects and backed by evidence. This page explains how to find, write, review, approve and publish controls, and how the AI assists help you write them.

Who uses it

RoleWhat they do here
AdminEverything on this page, including the AI assists
Policy editorCreates, edits, comments on, publishes, approves and deletes controls. Cannot run the AI assists.
Security managerRuns the AI assists, binds assets and approves controls in review
AuditorReads controls and their comments, and checks evidence with the AI evidence auditor
Incident responderReads controls

Buttons are not hidden by role. When your role does not allow a change, Command shows a message such as Save failed or Update failed.

Before you begin

Enrol the frameworks you want to map controls to. See Frameworks.
Register your assets and departments, so you can tie controls to them. See Assets and Settings.
Most workspaces start with controls created from a template pack. See Apply a template pack.

The Controls page

Click Controls in the top navigation. The page has two parts:

The list on the left. The filter chips All, Published, Active, In review and Draft show how many controls each holds. With All selected, the list is grouped in that order. Each row shows the stage, the risk (Low, Medium, High or Critical), the title, the implementation score and the first framework the control is mapped to.
The editor on the right, showing the selected control.

The search box Search controls… at the top finds controls by title.

The Controls page with the control list on the left and a published control open in the editor

A control's stage is Published once you publish it. Until then its stage is its status: Draft, In review or Active.

Each row has a menu (⋮, More actions) with Edit, Publish or Unpublish, and Delete.

The control editor

The title at the top, with the Edit / Preview button and a ⋮ menu next to it.
The details row: Pillar (People, Organization or Technology), Status (Draft, In review or Active), Risk, Implementation (the score, see The implementation score), Version once the control has been approved, and Effective date. In Preview, a change you make in the details row is saved at once. In Edit, it is saved with the rest of your changes when you leave edit mode.
The text of the control. An existing control opens in Preview, a formatted reading view. A new control opens in Edit.
The side panel with four sections: Framework mappings, Protected assets, Departments and Evidence, each with a count. Click a section heading to fold it.

A control with no text yet opens with a template made of the sections Purpose, Scope, Policy statements and Evidence, with example sentences. Replace them with your own text. The template's evidence checklist is only an example: it does not mean any evidence is attached.

Create a control

Who can do thisAdmin and Policy editor.
1
On the Controls page, click New. A new control opens in Edit.
2
Type a title over Untitled security control.
3
Choose the Pillar, Status and Risk, and optionally an Effective date.
4
Write the text. See Write the text.
5
Click Preview. Command saves the control and shows "{title}" created.

You can also click New control on the Dashboard, or + Add control in a column of the control board.

Edit a control

There is no Save button. Command saves your changes when you leave edit mode.

Who can do thisAdmin and Policy editor.
1
Open the control from the list.
2
Click Edit.
3
Change the title, the details row, the text or the side panel.
4
Click Preview. Command saves and shows "{title}" saved.
Important
If you open another control or another page while you are still in Edit, your changes are discarded. Always click Preview first.

If you open a control and click Preview without changing anything, Command saves nothing.

Write the text

In Edit, the text is made of blocks: paragraphs, headings, lists, checklists and callouts.

On an empty line, type / to open the command menu. Under Blocks, choose Heading, Subheading, Text, Bullet list, Checklist or Callout. Use the arrow keys and Enter to choose, and Escape to close the menu.
Press Enter to start a new block. In a list, Enter continues the list; on an empty list item it turns the item back into text.
Press Backspace on an empty block to remove it.
Tick checklist items to mark them done.

The command menu also has an AI assist section. See AI assists.

Map the control to frameworks

Under Framework mappings in the side panel:

1
Click Edit.
2
Click Add mapping, and either type a framework and clause, for example "ISO/IEC 27002:2022 5.15", or click one of the suggestions.
3
To remove a mapping, click the × on it.
4
Click Preview to save.

Only mappings to frameworks you have enrolled are shown.

Tie the control to assets

Under Protected assets, click Bind to an asset and pick an asset. To remove one, click the × on it. Each asset is coloured by its criticality.

In Preview, the change is saved straight away.
In Edit, it is saved with your other changes when you click Preview.

The same link shows on the Assets page under Protected by. See Assets.

Who can do thisAdmin, Policy editor and Security manager.

Choose the departments

Under Departments, click Edit, then + Department to add a department, or the × to remove one, and click Preview to save. The control's departments decide who receives the policies built from it, and who is asked by default when you request evidence for it.

Comment on a control

You can discuss any block of a control's text with your colleagues.

Who can do thisAdmin and Policy editor. Auditor and Incident responder can read comments.
1
Open the control and click Edit. A comment button appears next to each block, with the number of comments.
2
Click the comment button next to the block you want to discuss. The Comments panel opens.
3
Type in Add a comment… and press Enter, or click the arrow. Command shows Comment added.
4
When the discussion is finished, click Resolve. Command closes the thread and shows Comment thread resolved.
5
Click Preview when you are done.
A control in edit mode with the comment panel open next to a paragraph

Comments stay with their block after a reload. On a new control that you have not saved yet, Command shows Comment saved locally (save the control to persist); save the control to keep the comment.

Publish, unpublish and delete

Who can do thisAdmin and Policy editor.
Publish from the editor: open the ⋮ menu next to the title and choose Publish. Command sets the status to Active and marks the control as published.
Publish or unpublish from the list: open the row menu (⋮) and choose Publish or Unpublish. Command shows "{title}" published or "{title}" unpublished. Unpublishing leaves the status unchanged.
Delete: open the row menu (⋮) and choose Delete. Command shows "{title}" deleted.
Important
Delete removes the control at once. Command does not ask for confirmation, and you cannot undo it.

Creating, saving, publishing, unpublishing and deleting a control are all recorded in the Audit log.

Review and approve a control

Use a review when a second person should check a control before it is published.

Submit a control for review

Who can do thisAdmin and Policy editor.
1
Open the control, open the ⋮ menu next to the title and choose Submit for review.
2
Choose a Reviewer. The list of people is shown to an Admin. For other roles it says No other team members found — the control will be marked in review without a named reviewer.
3
Optionally, write a Note to reviewer.
4
Click Submit for review. The control moves to In review, and Command shows Submitted for review · assigned to followed by the reviewer's name.
Note
Command does not notify the reviewer. Let them know the control is waiting for them.

Review a control

While a control is in review, a bar at the bottom of the editor says who it is assigned to and how many comments are open. Read the control and its comments, then:

click Request changes to send it back to Draft, or
click Approve & publish to approve it. The control becomes Active and published, and Command records when it was approved and on which text.
Who can approveAdmin, Policy editor and Security manager.

If someone edits an approved control, the approval no longer covers the new text. The implementation score shows this as Approved, then edited — the approval no longer covers the text until the control is approved again.

Version history

Open the ⋮ menu and choose Version history, or click the version (for example v2) in the details row. A panel lists each approved version with its time, a summary and who made it. Click Close history to return.

Share a control

Open the ⋮ menu and choose Share. Command copies a link to the control and shows Sharing link copied to clipboard. The link opens Command on that control. The person you send it to needs access to your workspace.

The implementation score

Implementation shows how far a control is put into practice, from 0 to 100 %. Command calculates it from the control itself; nobody can type it in. Click the score to see what it is made of.

PartUp toHow it is earned
Written15The length of the text and the number of sections
Mapped to a framework15Full points for two or more confirmed clause mappings
Scoped to assets and owners10At least one protected asset, and at least one department
Reviewed and approved20Full points when approved and unchanged since. Half when approved and then edited, or when in review with a named reviewer.
Evidence attached15One or more evidence files, plus a bonus when Command can read all of them
Evidence stands up to audit25The share of evidence the AI evidence auditor judged Sufficient (full) or Incomplete (partial)

The score is updated after each save, binding, publication, review decision and evidence check, and once a day. The list may show the previous value until you reload the page.

Evidence on a control

The Evidence section of the side panel lists the evidence files linked to the control, with their status and date. Click a file name to open it.

Check as auditor asks the AI evidence auditor whether a file stands up as proof for this control. Check all checks every file. See Check evidence with the AI evidence auditor.
Request evidence asks people in your organisation for evidence; they answer in Counsel. See Ask people for evidence.
Attach evidence opens Documents › Evidence, where you upload a file and link it to the control. See Upload evidence.

AI assists

Command can help you write and improve a control. The assists use your control's title, its mapped framework clauses and its scope. When your workspace language is Dutch, they answer in Dutch.

Who can do thisAdmin and Security manager. A Policy editor cannot run the assists; Command then shows that the assist is unavailable.

From the command menu

Click Edit, go to an empty line, type /, and choose an item under AI assist:

AssistWhat it does
Draft control from promptDrafts the text in the sections Purpose, Scope, Policy and Implementation, and inserts it where you typed /
Suggest framework mappingsAdds suggested clause mappings to Framework mappings. It does not change the text.
Generate evidence checklistInserts an Evidence section with a checklist of the proof you need
Auto-enrich (risk, assets, mappings)Sets the risk and pillar, and adds protected assets, departments and framework mappings. It only chooses from your own assets, departments and enrolled frameworks, and removes nothing.
Critique my draftReviews the wording and adds review comments to the weak lines. See below.

While an assist works, the line shows AI · followed by the assist's name and working…. The result appears in the editor; nothing is saved until you click Preview, so you can review or remove it first.

From the ⋮ menu

Update control re-enriches the control (risk, pillar, assets and mappings) and then critiques its text against its mappings, protected assets and evidence. On a control without real text, it drafts the text, enriches the control and adds an evidence checklist instead.
Critique control reviews the text against its mappings, protected assets and evidence.

Both switch the editor to Edit. Click Preview to save the result.

Critique comments

A critique adds review comments by AI Reviewer to the lines they concern, each with a severity and a Suggested fix.

Click Fix control to replace the line with the suggested fix.
Click Reject critique to dismiss the comment.

Critique comments are suggestions for your current session. Apply the ones you want, then click Preview to save.

AI review notices

After Draft control from prompt, Command may show AI review notice(s), marked advisory, above the text, for example when the draft recommends forced password rotation, when it seems to miss levels or categories the control defines, or when it suggests a framework you have not enrolled. The notices are advice only; they are never saved into the text. Click Resolve / dismiss on a notice, or Dismiss all.

Drafting from a framework gap

On Frameworks › Gap analysis, Draft control writes a new control for a clause no control covers, in the background. When it is ready, the bell shows Draft ready: followed by the title; click it to open the control. See Close a gap.

How Command protects you

Nobody can set the implementation score by hand; it follows from the control's real state.
An approval records when it was given and on which text. Editing approved text visibly removes the approval from the score.
The AI assists never save by themselves. You review their output and save it by leaving edit mode.
Auto-enrich only chooses from your own assets, departments and enrolled frameworks.
Every create, save, publish, unpublish and delete is written to the audit log by the server.
