SPECTER

SPECTER

SPECTER is Soveryne's threat and vulnerability intelligence. Its console lets you look up threat groups, the attack techniques they use, malware and tools, and known vulnerabilities (CVEs) in one shared, regularly updated catalogue.

What SPECTER covers

SPECTER has four modules:

ModuleWhat it doesWhere you meet it
Threat IntelligenceA catalogue of adversaries (APT groups), MITRE ATT&CK techniques, and malware families and tools, built from reviewed public sourcesThe SPECTER console: Adversaries, Techniques, Malware, Sources and Source health
Vulnerability IntelligenceA catalogue of published vulnerabilities with their scores, exploitation status and affected productsThe SPECTER console: CVEs. ATLAS also uses this catalogue to match what it discovers against known vulnerabilities.
Threat ModelingWorks out which adversaries matter to your organisation and how well your controls cover their techniquesNot in the console yet
Vulnerability ScanningChecks your software against the vulnerability catalogueNot in the console yet

The catalogue is the same for every organisation. It is reference information gathered from public sources, not data about your organisation. You look things up in SPECTER; you don't add or change records.

Who uses it

RoleWhat they do here
Everyone with access to SPECTERBrowse every page, open every record, search CVEs and use the graphs
AdminThe same, and also sees two extra diagnostic columns on Source health (Last Attempt At and Error Code)

Nobody can edit, add or delete catalogue records in SPECTER.

Before you begin

You need a Soveryne account with access to SPECTER. You sign in once, through the Soveryne sign-in page or your organisation's single sign-on.
Open SPECTER from the Soveryne portal.

Getting around

The header shows Soveryne and SPECTER on the left and your profile button (your initials) on the right. The navigation on the left has six pages:

PageWhat you find thereMore
AdversariesAPT groups and other threat actors, with their targets and techniques. This is the page SPECTER opens on.Threat intelligence
TechniquesMITRE ATT&CK techniques and subtechniquesThreat intelligence
MalwareMalware families and threat tools, with the groups that use themThreat intelligence
CVEsThe vulnerability catalogue, with search and filters. It opens empty until you search or choose Browse newest CVEs.CVEs
SourcesThe sources the catalogue is built from, with their licensing termsSources
Source healthWhen each source was last brought up to dateSources

To go back to the Soveryne portal, select the Soveryne logo at the top left, or use your profile menu. Your profile menu shows your name, your email address, your role and workspace, and two actions:

Return to portal takes you back to the Soveryne portal.
Log out signs you out.

Lists and records

Every page shows its records as a table. Below the table, a status line tells you how many records are shown and which page you are on, for example "50 records shown · Page 1". Use Previous and Next to move between pages of 50 records (CVE search results come 30 at a time). Refresh reloads the current page.

To open a record, click its name (the first cell of the row). The record opens in a panel with a heading, a row of summary figures and sections of detail. Fields that don't belong in a named section are collected in a collapsed Record metadata section at the end.

Records link to each other. For example, an adversary's record lists its techniques; click one to open that technique. A back button (Back to followed by the name of the record you came from) then returns you to where you were. Close a record with the close button in its top-right corner.

Links to outside websites, such as the MITRE ATT&CK site, open in a new tab.

Searching

On Adversaries, Techniques, Sources and Source health, the search box (Search this page…) filters the records already shown on the current page as you type. It does not search the whole catalogue. Use Next to look further.
On Malware, the search box (Search names, aliases or IDs…) searches the whole malware and tool catalogue by name, alias or ID.
On CVEs, the search box (CVE ID or vendor/product) searches the whole vulnerability catalogue when you choose Search catalogue or press Enter. See CVEs.

Graph views

Adversaries, Techniques and Malware open as a graph: each record is a node, and the lines between nodes show how records are related. Use the view button in the toolbar to switch between the graph (Graph view) and the table (List view).

Layouts

Choose a layout under Layout:

Constellation (the default) places each group of nodes in its own area, which you can move freely.
Orbit places the groups in a ring; dragging a group moves it around the ring.

Whichever layout you use:

Zoom with the mouse wheel or with the Zoom in (+) and Zoom out (−) buttons. Fit graph fits the whole graph on the screen.
Drag the background to move around. Drag a node to move it within its group, or drag a group's rim or name to move the whole group. Double-click a group's name to put it back in its automatic position.
Reset layout puts every node and group back where SPECTER placed it. Positions you drag are kept until you reload the page.
Click a node to open its record. Click a line to see the relationship it stands for.

You can also use the keyboard: press Tab to move between nodes and lines, Enter or Space to open the details, and the arrow keys to move a node (hold Shift for larger steps).

Filters

Open Filters above the graph to choose what it shows. The summary next to Filters shows your selection and how many nodes are hidden.

Selection. On Adversaries, choose Select APTs and tick the groups you want to see; on Malware, choose Select malware and find a family by name. Remove a selected item with the × on its chip. See Threat intelligence for details.
Group by clusters the nodes by Kind / ATT&CK tactic or by Connected groups.
Relationship labels writes the relationship on each line. It is off by default.
Connection icons shows an icon on each line. It is on by default.
Graph categories lets you hide kinds of node. Under Resource types (for example APT groups, Malware, Tools, Techniques and Subtechniques) and ATT&CK tactics, untick a category to hide it; each shows how many nodes it has. Hidden categories also hide their connected lines. Show all brings back every category in a section, and Restore all graph categories brings back all of them.

When you type in the search box in graph view, the graph keeps the matching nodes and the nodes directly connected to them.

The legend below the graph shows how many nodes, connections and groups are drawn, and explains the shapes used on the current page.

Note
A graph draws at most 120 nodes. When there are more, the status line tells you how many nodes and connections are hidden. Narrow your selection or hide categories to see the rest.

SPECTER has no downloads or exports.

How SPECTER protects you

Read-only. No one can change catalogue content from the console.
Reviewed sources. Every source has been reviewed before it can be used, and each one shows its licence class and redistribution terms on the Sources page. Sources with restrictive terms stay switched off unless they have been explicitly enabled. See Sources.
Careful attribution. Links between a group and a malware family carry a confidence tier, and weaker links are labelled Possible usage. SPECTER reminds you that "The relationship does not attribute every sample or indicator to a group." Possible duplicates are shown as candidates: "These are candidates; the catalogue has not merged their identities."
Careful applicability. A CVE record reminds you that "A listed CPE alone does not establish applicability."
No raw feeds. The console shows published catalogue records only. It does not show raw source data or indicators of compromise.
